1. The 60-Day Advance Reservation Period (ARP) Rule
In a landmark revision enacted by the Ministry of Railways, the Advance Reservation Period (ARP) for train bookings was revised from 120 days down to 60 days (excluding the date of journey).
Key ARP Guidelines
- How Booking Date is Calculated: If you plan to travel on 1st April, bookings will open exactly 60 days prior at 8:00 AM IST.
- Why the Rule Was Changed: Railway studies showed that when bookings opened 120 days in advance, over 21% of bookings resulted in cancellations, and nearly 5% of passengers never showed up (No-Show), blocking seats for genuine travelers. The 60-day window promotes confirmed travel intent and minimizes black-market tout hoarding.
- Exceptions to 60-Day ARP: Short-distance day express trains such as Taj Express and Gomti Express continue to have a shorter 30-day ARP. Foreign tourist quota bookings remain open up to 365 days in advance.
2. Boarding Station Change Rules
Need to board the train from a station other than your origin? Indian Railways allows passengers to change their boarding station online:
- Deadline: Boarding station can be modified online via your IRCTC account up to 24 hours before train departure or before chart preparation.
- One-Time Change: Boarding station can be changed only once per ticket booking.
- Critical Warning on Original Station: Once you change your boarding station to a subsequent station, you forfeit all travel rights between the original station and the new boarding point. If you attempt to board from the original station, you will be treated as traveling without a ticket and charged full fare plus standard penalty!
3. The "2-Stop Rule" for TTE Berth Reallocation
One of the most frequently asked passenger questions is: "Agar main apni boarding station par train nahi pakad paya, to TTE meri seat kab de dega?"
According to the Indian Railways Commercial Manual (Rule 505):
| Scenario | TTE Waiting Requirement | Consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger Delay | TTE must wait for 2 scheduled stops or 1 hour (whichever is later) before declaring a passenger absent. | Berth remains locked in passenger's name until the grace threshold expires. |
| After Grace Expiry | TTE updates electronic Handheld Terminal (HHT) as "No Show". | Berth is automatically reassigned to RAC passengers on board or next boarding station vacancy pool. |
4. Train Journey Extension Rules
If you hold a confirmed or RAC ticket to Station A, but decide during travel that you need to travel further to Station B on the same train:
- Approach the onboard Train Ticket Examiner (TTE) before reaching your ticketed destination station.
- Request an official Journey Extension.
- The TTE will calculate the fare difference from your origin to the extended destination and issue an official Electronic Fare Transaction (EFT) receipt.
- If the berth is already booked by another passenger from Station A onward, you may be shifted to an available vacant berth identified via RailSeatGap or accommodated in sleeper/general class.
5. Child Fare & Concession Rules
| Age Group | Fare Slab | Berth Allocation |
|---|---|---|
| Under 5 Years | Free of Charge | No separate berth provided (travels with parent). |
| 5 to 11 Years (With Berth) | Full Adult Fare (100%) | Full individual berth allocated. |
| 5 to 11 Years (Without Berth) | Half Base Fare (50%) | Shares berth with accompanying adult. |
| 12 Years & Above | Full Adult Fare (100%) | Full individual berth allocated. |
6. Free Luggage Allowance per Passenger
Indian Railways permits passengers to carry personal luggage free of charge up to specified weight limits based on the coach travel class:
- AC First Class (1A): 70 kg free allowance (marginal allowance: 15 kg).
- AC 2-Tier (2A): 50 kg free allowance (marginal allowance: 10 kg).
- AC 3-Tier / 3 Economy / Chair Car: 40 kg free allowance (marginal allowance: 10 kg).
- Sleeper Class (SL): 40 kg free allowance (marginal allowance: 10 kg).
- Second Class (2S): 35 kg free allowance (marginal allowance: 10 kg).
